Our Story
Nearly 100 Years of Family Frying
Four generations, one family, and a passion for proper fish and chips. This is the story of Huby’s.
Where It All Began
From a Barnsley Chippy to Hemsworth’s Heart
It all started back in the early 1930s, when Great Grandma Huby opened the doors to her very first fish and chip shop. It was a simple idea — serve honest, freshly made food to the local community — but it was an idea that stuck. From that very first day of frying, the shop became a neighbourhood staple.
Over the decades, the tradition was passed down through the family. The Hubys grew to run fish and chip shops across the Barnsley area, each one keeping the same commitment to quality, community and good old-fashioned hard work firmly at the heart of everything they did. The recipes stayed the same, the standards never dropped, and the customers kept coming back.
Today, Huby’s is in its fourth generation — and we’re prouder than ever. We’ve brought the family tradition into Wakefield with our first full restaurant at the old YMCA in Hemsworth. We still do things the way they’ve always been done: fresh fish, fresh cut chips, home-made pies and fishcakes prepared from scratch every single morning. The only thing that’s changed is that we’ve got a bit more room to welcome you in.
“We pride ourselves on serving quality fish and chips alongside our home-made pies, fishcakes and sweets — all prepared fresh every single day by our fantastic team.”

What Makes Us Different
Our Values
Some things have never changed at Huby’s — and they never will.
The Restaurant
A New Home at The Old YMCA
When the old YMCA building in Hemsworth became available, we knew straight away — this was the one. After years of running fish and chip shops across Barnsley, it was the perfect opportunity to bring the Huby’s tradition into Wakefield and turn a lifelong dream into reality: a proper sit-down restaurant.
We’ve lovingly refurbished the building from top to bottom, creating a warm, welcoming space that’s fully licensed and wheelchair accessible. Whether you’re popping in for a quick lunch, sitting down for a family meal or booking a table for one of our live music evenings — there’s a seat at the table for everyone.
Come and See Us
Now you know the story — it’s time to taste it. Book a table or walk straight in. We’d love to welcome you.
